Majid’s Persian Kababs- Rizal St., Davao City

It was the last night the Araw ng Dabaw 2011 celebration; we tracked where the thumping sounds came from and it led us to Rizal St. Light and Sound systems were set up for the street party. Before hitting the dance floor we had snacks at Majid’s Persian Kabab which is right across Rizal Promenade. As people gathered, we sat down and chowed down the famous kabab in Davao City.

The 25 to 30 seater hole in the wall owned by a former Hollywood stuntman serves delicious yet affordable Middle Eastern dishes. Photos of Majid (the owner) with actors he worked with were posted on the wall, an interesting décor other than the photos of food on their menu.

On the table:

Chicken Kabab

Chicken Kebab consists of grilled chicken breast chunks. It comes with grilled tomato and pita bread. I like the lean chicken meat; juicy, tender, and well seasoned.

Add the garlic sauce and hot sauce to complete that kabab meal.

Beef Kabab

Same as the chicken kebab, this meal comes with grilled juicy tomato and pita bread. The Beef Kabab consists of ground beef marinated with the right mixture of spices. The beef tastes good in every bite; the flavor is fantastic. It has the right blend of spices, not overpowering.

Beef Cholo Kabab

The Beef Cholo Kabab has two servings of grilled beek kabab, grilled juicy tomato and a cup of rice with butter on top. I read some reviews that Majid’s used to serve grape/date/apricot seed as added spices for the kabab. I didn’t see it on the table. I haven’t tried grape seed on my kebab…i’m curious about the taste.

When in Davao City and you crave for a kabab, visit Majid’s Persian Kabab… you get the value for your money, absolutely no frills. They’re open Mondays to Saturdays, 11:30am til 10pm.

Merco- Quirino Avenue, Davao City

Merco became my instant favorite when I was in Davao last March 2011. I like the simplicity of the interiors, the quality of service, and the food they offer.

Merco has been in the market since 1946, and with more than 35 branches all over Davao, it has made a mark in serving quality food in the entire province.

I was in Davao for the Araw ng Dabaw Festival and Merco gave discounts and freebies during the week. We got free milkshake for every rice meal. I was ecstatic that I ate breakfast, lunch, snacks, and dinner in Merco, and I wanted more of it. The servings was just right for the price and the taste is truly matches the pinoy palate. The waitstaff were friendly and attentive to the customers needs.

Below are some of the meals we ordered: (clockwise)

Chicken strips, Spaghetti with bun, pritong bangus with garlic rice and egg, and tapsilog. Sorry for the photos, I was halfway my meal when I remembered to take photos. Oooops…  :/

I’m missing these free milkshakes we had. It came in vanilla, ube, chocolate, strawberry, mango, and durian flavor. I tried everything except for the durian -it out of stock. The milkshake was thick and heavenly!!!

There’s nothing in the menu that’s more than Php120 so think about how affordable and satisfying it is to eat in Merco. By the way, it is known also as a bakeshop and ice cream parlor; you can smell bread fresh from the oven.

Start your day right by having your breakfast in Merco. Spend your day, have snacks, or end the night by a great meal or a cup of coffee without spending too much. Merco is all over the metro.  🙂

Lachi’s Sansrival Atbp. – Davao City

I had to travel approximately 598.36 to 650.39 nautical miles to reach my destination,Davao City, on search of this restaurant I’ve been hearing good reviews about. Located along Marfori Heights, a residential area, it was somehow difficult to find the shop as it didn’t look like a restaurant. No poster whatsoever on the glass windows. It was only the uber simple green and white sign that says: Lachi’s told me we “hit the target”.

We were welcomed by a fully packed 20-30 seater restaurant, there’s no place to sit and still I saw 4 more people trying to squeeze in. Lucky enough, we shared a table with 2 ladies having lunch.

The waitstaff was busy or should I say everybody else was busy so we got the menu ourselves instead of waiting for someone to hand them to us. No, I ain’t complaining. I was just excited to try out the mouth-watering desserts.

"Home of scrumptious cakes in Davao City" - - -tinaps

Here’s a teaser of what we had… (top view)

simply scrumptious...

On the table:

The Five-Chocolate Torte (Php65/slice) definitely blew my mind away. For me, it was the best among the rest of the cakes we ordered. This sinfully delicious cake consists of Belgian Cocoa, Dark Chocolate, Milk Chocolate, White Chocolate and Bittersweet Chocolate. Chocolate lovers will absolutely adore this delectable creation!

Layers of chocolates blends well, silky bittersweet chocolate on top to a mousse -like texture at the bottom. For its price, there’s no doubt it’s a great deal. You should try it!

Five-Chocolate Torte

Next is the NY Blueberry Cheesecake (Php85/slice). It has a buttery graham cracker crust for the base, over it is a thick New York style cheesecake topped with sweetened blueberries.

For me it tasted ok, however, I didn’t quite like the texture of the crust.  It is a bit hard, seems like it’s been in the fridge for some time. I liked the creaminess of the cheesecake and how it blended well with the juiciness of the blueberries at every bite.

NY Blueberry Cheesecake

This silky-smooth Dulce de Leche (Php62/slice) is wonderfully sweet. It has the right amount of sweetness and creaminess  of milk and the rich caramel flavor that hit my palate on the spot. This concoction gave a mouthful of orgasmic flare!

Dulce de Leche

want some?

I guess we liked the cakes so much, we finished our plates in a snap.

We even had one Macadamia White Choco bar (Php57/slice) and Amaretto Fudge bar (Php57/slice) to go. PLUS a whole Roasted Walnut Choco Supreme cake (Php420) .

Traveling this far is worth it especially if you get to taste fantastic finds like desserts from Lachi’s. I recommend this shop for tourists and locals, whether you have a sweet tooth or not.

Despite the cramped up seating, Lachi’s stands up as one of the city’s best when it comes to creating scrumptious desserts. It’s a clap, clap, clap!

Penong’s Barbecue Seafood & Grill- Quirino Ave., Davao City

Penong’s Barbecue Seafood & Grill is ” the #1 Barbecue House in Davao.” Well, that’s what it says in their banner. I’ve read about how good the chicken inasal is and how their customer service sucks before flying to Davao. Good or bad, I wanted to try it myself. After landing at the Davao airport, we headed to Elle’s Pension House owned by the Mangaoils. We checked out nearby stores and restaurants and lucky enough we found Penong’s grill -Quirino branch just blocks away from the pension house.

Upon entering the restaurant, we were greeted by some wait staff having their lunch, others were busy wiping the tables, and I saw a couple of ’em sleeping. We arrived around 1pm and the restaurant was empty; I thought they were closed or we just came in early. We then went inside an air-conditioned room since it was freaking hot that day. A wait staff readily followed us and handed the menu.

Without batting an eyelash, I ordered for the Inato meal 5 (Php 92) that comes with a jumbo sized chicken inato and pork barbecue, unlimited rice and soup. Baloogs had Sinugbang Pusit (Php152) and bottomless rice (php16), plus the Adobong Kangkong (Php 63) for sharing. We added a pitcher of Iced Tea for Php 42.

It took more than 30 min for our food to be served. I was able to take pictures of the restaurant, cross the street to buy prepaid load, and up to the time I came back, our food wasn’t served still. I try to understand that it takes a lot of time to grill meat but they should’ve at least served our drinks while waiting.

On the table:

Here’s the Sinugbang Pusit with atchara on the side. The grilled squid is stuffed with onion, tomato, ginger and spring onion. I was expecting a bigger size of serving for its price. I could get grilled squid way cheaper than this in Manila.

The squid, however, is soft and easy to chew. I didn’t enjoy it much since it has too much onion and tomatoes in it that overpowers the taste of the squid.

In contrast, the serving of the Adobong Kangkong is more than expected. It’s probably good for up to 4 persons. We couldn’t finish it. It has too much pepper and ginger which again, was overpowering. We were disappointed about ordering this dish.

Then came my chicken inato and pork bbq. It’s fantastic. I like the char and the golden brown color of the skin. The juicy meat was cooked well. I dipped it in soy sauce with calamansi and chowed it in no time.

I like the chicken skin, as always. It was sweet, similar to tocino. I think vinegar with chili would be the best match for this just to balance the taste.

The pork bbq tastes the same. There was just 3 small pieces of it which left it unnoticeable. The soup wasn’t served. I had to remind the wait staff that the soup is included in the meal.

The chicken is good…but in my opinion, the chicken inasals I’ve tried in Manila tasted better than Penong’s. I give it one clap though for the good taste of chicken and the cleanliness of the place.   🙂
