Caution Hot + Insane Chicken Challenge (Maginhawa Street Food Trip 2)

This food trip is all about hot and spicy food in Maginhawa Street and we took it to the extreme. First off, we went to Caution Hot and got our spicy noodles fix. You get to choose your meat, broth, noodles, and level of spiciness. I had pork-Szechuan-egg noodles in 2nd degree burn. It also has mushrooms, greens, and fried egg in it. 2nd degree is tolerable and I think I can handle til 3rd degree burn. Thumbs up also to the Kuchay-Pork dumplings. I like it dipped in the soy sauce + chili sauce mix rather than the black vinegar. Yum!

Next stop was at 150 Maginhawa Food Park where we had 1lb of buffalo wings with INSANE level of heat…the hottest. We also had 1lb of chicken wings in WILD level of spiciness just in case we chicken out, literally and figuratively. It is indeed insane! My mouth was on fire!!! SAM’s Vanilla Caramel shake helped dilute the painful heat in my mouth. Whewwww! With 4 wings left on the table…I guess food wins in this challenge.

Carinderia Buffet- V.Luna

This is probably the cheapest buffet restaurant in Quezon City. It opened with a P99 pesos price tag then added a few more bucks the following year. What’s awesome about dining here is that there’s no time restriction, unlike other buffet places that gives a time limit of 2 or 3 hours.

We arrived just in time for dinner and a number of customers were coming in. Ambiance is rustic and cozy. Don’t expect fancy interiors or food presentation as this place is styled with simple Filipino decorations.

The dishes they offer are Filipino home-cooked meals you can also find in a carinderia. They have all sorts of fried fish- galunggong, tilapia, etc. There’s lumpia  and fried chicken.

They have sarciado, dinuguan, menudo, afritada, tokwa’t baboy, binagoongan,  adobong pusit, bopis, and more.

Breakfast items are also offered such as the longganisa and tortang talong.

Watch out your cholesterol level as some food items are oily and have more fat than meat content.

For dessert, they offer minatamis na saging, gulaman, and ginataang halo halo.

I had ginisang petchay, adobong pusit, tortang talong, longganisa, and binagoongan for my 1st plate. My 2nd plate had menudo and friend chicken, and a few more longganisa. I wasn’t able to try everything on the spread as I was full drinking bottomless pineapple juice (plus Php 45).

If you are in Quezon City, particularly near V. Luna, go drop by Carinderia Buffet for a tummy-filling lunch or dinner. This is the place to dine if you are on a budget.  🙂

Note: Carinderia Buffet also accepts reservations as a party venue for Birthdays, Christening, and other special occasions. Feel free to contact them anytime using the number posted below.

Update: June 8, 2012- I was here this afternoon, buffet price is now Php 144 per head…vat inclusive.

Note: They are open from 10:30-2pm and 5:30-9:30.

Raza’s Kabab and Persian Cuisine – Katipunan Ave.

It’s past midnight and we’re hungry so we searched for a place to eat. We drove along Anonas.. checked out 70’s Bistro and found out Parokya ni Edgar was playing. Oh, only if we knew they had a gig that night we could’ve gone there earlier. We then drove to Teacher’s Village but most of the restaurants were closed… and we ended up in Raza’s, a new restaurant in Katipunan. It is located where Blue Finn Grill & Restaurant used to be.

Raza’s offers Kabab and Persian cuisine though some Filipino food are also part of the menu.

On the table:

Raza’s Beef Shawarma (Php 85) has minced beef,  cucumber, tomato and onion wrapped in pita bread.  Add garlic- yoghurt sauce and hot chili sauce for some kick. The pita that was served was good… it’s puffy and hot.

Here’s Chelo Kebab (Php 95) that comes with ground beef with tomato and onion. I was quite disappointed with what was served. How am I supposed to eat kebab without pita bread or rice? The meat is juicy and tasty but still overpriced. I wished I ordered Beef Shawarma instead.

Extra order of pita bread costs Php 15 each. We ordered 5 more for carryout.

Also on the menu is Pancit Bihon (Php 130), obviously not Persian, but tastes satisfactory for a group with hungry tummies. It is cooked upon order which is good.

This is the Seafood Chopseuy (Php 130). It looks and tasted the same as the toppings on the pancit bihon. Hahaha… Sorry but price is the same, tastes is the same, except that it doesn’t have noodles. Serving is good for 1-2 persons and yes you need to order a cup of rice separately.

Another Filipino dish on the menu is the Chicken Inasal (Php 90). The chicken is covered with sweet sauce,  you won’t need a dipping sauce anymore.

I checked out Raza’s facebook page and it’s good to see that they’re offering value meals ranging from Php60 to Php 90. That’s GREAT!!! There’s room for improvement and with a little more staff training (familiarity with the menu), Raza’s will go a long way. See you again a few months from now.

Gloria Maris – Araneta Center, Cubao

It was past 7pm and my mom didn’t have enough time to prepare dinner… and so we had an impromptu dinner. It took us more than 30 minutes to arrive in Araneta Center due to heavy traffic. It was James Ingram’s concert that night, hence the heavy traffic and the full parking lot. We spent another 10 minutes looking for a parking space in Gateway Mall. Oh… I was thinking, dinner should be good…

We headed to Gloria Maris for some tummy-filing Chinese meal.

On the table:

We couldn’t decide what dimsum to order; I thought the Dimsum Combination platter (Php 247) is a great choice. It has assorted dumplings like hakaw, japanese siomai, siomai, beancurd roll, and some sort of seaweed with sesame seeds. It was a solid starter while waiting for our main course to arrive.

The Asado Noodle Soup (Php 178) arrived steaming hot. Each sip was packed with the tasty Asado flavor. The meat was tender and easy to cut and chew, same with the noodles that remained firm yet tender.

The Lechon Macau (Php 268) was cooked nice and crisp. I love the sauce that came with it, it went well with the tender meat and crispy skin of the lechon.

Mom wanted a fish dish and chose Sweet and Sour Fish Fillet (Php 268). The seemingly ordinary dish turned out to be a flavorful meal. Not to mention, healty too! The fish fillet was loaded with sweet and sour sauce with lot of carrots and bell peppers, and onion strips. The flavor brings fireworks to the mouth… yum!!!

Among all the food on the table, the Fried Squid with Salt and Pepper (Php 278) was my favorite. Dunk it on the vinegar with chili and chow it down… ooohlalala… It’s undeniably the best dish for the night. I love the easy to chew squid… not gummy, and the crunchy breading. It explodes in the mouth like a bomb!!!

We thought we should get a noodle dish other than the Asado noodle soup so we ordered Crispy Noodle with Mixed Vegetables (Php 228). It is like the usual noodle/pancit dish just with a crispy noodle. I didn’t get to eat much of this pancit.

I ate and ate until such time I realized I ate too much there’s no more room for the Seafood Mango Salad (Php 168) or for dessert. Still, I ate about 2 spoonfuls of this salad. I find it interesting to combine seafood and fruits, though I’m not a big fan of it. As for the Seafood Mango Salad, it has crabsticks and shrimps and mango chunks topped with cream and cherry. Surprisingly, it was good. The sweet and tangy mango chunks paired well with the crabstick and shrimps.

Overall, I give Gloria Maris a clap, clap, clap for the good food that we had. Though I hope you could improve more by maintaining clean and presentable tables/seats. Some of the  seat covers are already torn and badly need a replacement.

For families and friends who are looking for some good tasting Chinese food, visit Gloria Maris and you will definitely leave the place with a smile… and a heavy tummy.   🙂

Note: I didn’t bring my camera that night and so I would like to thank my sister-in-law, Cy, for taking photos of the food using her Iphone.

IL Mercanti – Metrowalk, Ortigas

Another food mecca for foodies can be found in Pasig City. IL Mercanti Food Bazaar opened last September 2011, catering to families and friends as well as employees from call centers/companies nearby. It operates Wednesdays to Fridays, from 7pm to 5am.

Metrowalk has a wide parking space but it may still be hard to find a place to park your car, with a lot of people coming and wanting to try out the food here in Il Mercanti…most especially on a Friday night. As for us, it took us 30-45 min from Greenhills to Metrowalk. Whatta TERRIBLE traffic we got there! We had to wait for 15 to 20 minutes before we were able to park. Luckily, we found a table right away. We cooled ourselves down with iced tea while waiting  for our table to be cleared.

We roamed around and tried to search for something new, something interesting. There’s a large variety of food choices and one will absolutely enjoy “exploring” – it’s delightful to the senses. At very affordable prices, one can sample products such as: Mexican food, Chinese food, Filipino food, Mexican food, Korean food, Roastbeef, Lechon, Tapa, Steak, Mixed Rice, Barbecue. For snacks and drinks they have Burger, Corndog, Pizza, Pasta, Shawarma, Fish and Chips, Ice cream, Cakes and Pastries, Empanada,  Churros, Crepe, Bubble Milk Tea, and Fruit Juices.

Whew!!! I could hardly remember all the food I saw. Here are some photos of what we had for dinner.

The Spaghetti with Pesto sauce with Chicken tenders and Garlic bread was okay. Same goes for the Baked Macaroni. The serving was just right but it lacks flavor.

Crispy liempo thinly sliced somewhat looks like crispy bacon. It’s crunchy and a bit salty. It would’ve been perfect if served with soysauce and calamansi or vinegar. Uhmm… just a suggestion.

There’s a number of people gathered around this stall. Hmmm… the sight of the pans make me wanna try ’em all. Deep dish pizza for pizza lovers!

The pizza looks inviting… enticing… but sadly, it failed to satisfy our palate. The crust was thick and has a texture of a tasty/american bread, that absorbed the sauce. The topmost layer of the pizza did not have enough sauce which made the pizza dry and a bit hard to chew.

Oh man! You will get some sugar rush with the huge selection of sweets in IL Mercanti. We tried Blueberry Cheesecake… one of my favorites. The taste was ok but not as good as the ones sold in some famous bakeshops in the metro.

This must be the best among what I had that night. This is… AMBURGER’s Juicy Lucy with Bacon Mushroom Melt. OOOHHHLALA!!!

The patty itself is stuffed with cheese making every bite oooozing with cheesy goodness. The huge cheeseburger has generous servings of crunchy bacon, lettuce, mushroom, blue cheese, cheese sauce, onion, relish, and the thick Juicy Lucy patty.

It was awesome!!! As much as I like to finish the entire burger, I couldn’t because I had little of everything we ordered and I’m stuffed. I find this the most delish burger in town. It’s OUTRAGEOUS, I tell ‘ya!

Hurry up and experience good food and fun with your family and friends here in IL Mercanti. I know the bazaar just started and a lot of improvements will take place as they settle. I will definitely go back for some more Juicy Lucy burger and try out other food they offer.
