Mom & Tina’s Bakery Cafe- Katipunan

How do you relax after a long day? As for me, I just eat and eat and eat. It was a bit more challenging this time because the fridge is empty and no one cooked dinner. My friend M and I have been working in front of the computer for hours, we definitely deserve a good meal. To give our strained eyes a break, I asked her out for dinner. We hailed a cab and drove along Katipunan Avenue. The sign Mom & Tina’s caught my attention. In an instant, I told the driver to drop us there. I heard good things about this bakery cafe and I thought we should give it a shot.

Inside has a cozy country feel—with wooden tables adorned with flowers in bronze cans, cushioned seats, dimmed lights, with walls decorated with blue and white china and lace doilies. The area is quite small, seats are close together one could actually hear the conversation from the next table. The place is a perfect after school-hang out place for students from nearby universities. Families and friends can enjoy great tasting homey comfort meals for breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

On the table:

While waiting for our meals to arrive, we quenched our thirst with ice cold blue lemonade (bottomless: Php70) and lemon iced tea (bottomless Php 70). The waitstaff was kind enough to give us a glass of water together with our drinks.

We skipped on soup and salad and starters; I chose a pasta dish and a potato instead. As recommended by the waitstaff, I ordered Shepherd’s pie and Chicken Spinach Lasagna… their bestsellers.

Shepherd’s Pie (P195) is a casserole made of ground beef and mushrooms in a creamy tomato  based sauce topped with a layer of mashed potatoes. It is served with 2 garlic cheese rolls that best compliments the creamy and meaty taste of the dish. It is a delightful potato dish that is a meal in itself.

The Chicken Spinach Lasagna (Php 175) consists of homemade spinach pasta with chicken, tomato, and cream sauce. It’s so flavorful and filling. I could actually feel the warmth and texture of the lasagna, beef, and mushrooms as I savor every bite. This dish is lip smacking good! It came with 2 garlic cheese rolls.

M wanted to eat rice, so we ordered for Salisbury Steak (Quarter lb- Php230) as recommended by the waitstaff. It wasn’t disappointing, as we enjoyed the grilled sirloin patty, mashed potatoes, and mixed vegetables. They give a generous serving of gravy that covered the patty and mashed potato. It came with a cup of rice that we could hardly finish. The serving is good for sharing. I like this dish the most. It is insanely delicious!!! It’s no wonder this hearty meal is one of their bestsellers!

We had no room for dessert, but I could not resist the cakes and pastries displayed on the counter. We shared a cup of Toblerone Walnut Torte (Php 110). I wanted to see what’s underneath so I tipped the cup over and let the cake fall on the plate.

The cake looks kinda messed up now. Hahaha… Well now we can see the layers of meringue, chocolate cream, whipped cream, walnut and small toblerone chunks. Sweet Heaven! Definitely a must try!

If you are for warm, homey, rich, and hearty meals, head on to Mom & Tina’s Bakery Cafe. I give it a clap, clap, clap, for their great tasting food.

Stackers Burger Cafe- Resorts World Manila

After a 3-hour prenup photo shoot in Paranaque, my friend and I headed to Newport Mall to grub on snacks at Stackers Burger Cafe. Both hungry and exhausted, we hiked to the 4th floor, dropped our bags, and called in the wait staff to get our orders. It took some time for me to browse the menu and decide what to order as it was my first time to dine in Stackers.  Being a burger cafe, the menu offers a wide burger variation; it’s quite confusing for me which one to get. I want to try everything!!!

On the table:

Caesar Burger Bowl (Php 148) contains a quarter pound Australian burger patty, fresh lettuce, bacon, croutons, and Caesar dressing.

It’s quite interesting to have both burger and salad greens in one dish. To date, Stackers has the most succulent and flavorful burger patty I’ve tasted. The Caesar dressing is light and runny. It didn’t overpower the flavor of the patty. I enjoyed every bite of  this dish.

Stackers Fried Mozzarella Sticks (Php 125) consists of 5 pieces breaded mozzarella sticks deep fried to golden perfection served with a tangy tex mex ranchero dip.

This crunchy outside -gooey inside deep-fried cheese snack has a fantastic crunch and flavor. The tex mex ranchero dip compliments the chewiness of the melted mozzarella cheese.

Philly Cheese Burger (Php 155) is made up of a quarter pound beef patty topped with sautéed red and green bell peppers, onions, mozzarella cheese, and ranch dressing on a long bun.

It’s like the famous Philly Cheesesteak using burger patty instead of the traditional thinly sliced pieces of steak. This burger variation is so awesome, I wolfed it down in no time.

For an additional (Php65) on top of the burger price, you can get crispy chips and a drink.

Vanilla Milkshake (Php 90) is one of the many flavors of milkshakes on the menu. Milkshakes otherwise known as thickshakes are smooth, thick, and creamy beverages that are ice cream based and mixed with flavors for that refreshing milky goodness.

Sipping on this deliciously thick and creamy vanilla milkshake can absolutely bring a smile to one’s  face.

Overall, I give a clap, clap, clap to Stackers Burger Cafe! The Auss’m burgers, lipsmacking sides, and thick icy cold milkshakes are to die for… yes, I am coming back for more!

IL Mercanti – Metrowalk, Ortigas

Another food mecca for foodies can be found in Pasig City. IL Mercanti Food Bazaar opened last September 2011, catering to families and friends as well as employees from call centers/companies nearby. It operates Wednesdays to Fridays, from 7pm to 5am.

Metrowalk has a wide parking space but it may still be hard to find a place to park your car, with a lot of people coming and wanting to try out the food here in Il Mercanti…most especially on a Friday night. As for us, it took us 30-45 min from Greenhills to Metrowalk. Whatta TERRIBLE traffic we got there! We had to wait for 15 to 20 minutes before we were able to park. Luckily, we found a table right away. We cooled ourselves down with iced tea while waiting  for our table to be cleared.

We roamed around and tried to search for something new, something interesting. There’s a large variety of food choices and one will absolutely enjoy “exploring” – it’s delightful to the senses. At very affordable prices, one can sample products such as: Mexican food, Chinese food, Filipino food, Mexican food, Korean food, Roastbeef, Lechon, Tapa, Steak, Mixed Rice, Barbecue. For snacks and drinks they have Burger, Corndog, Pizza, Pasta, Shawarma, Fish and Chips, Ice cream, Cakes and Pastries, Empanada,  Churros, Crepe, Bubble Milk Tea, and Fruit Juices.

Whew!!! I could hardly remember all the food I saw. Here are some photos of what we had for dinner.

The Spaghetti with Pesto sauce with Chicken tenders and Garlic bread was okay. Same goes for the Baked Macaroni. The serving was just right but it lacks flavor.

Crispy liempo thinly sliced somewhat looks like crispy bacon. It’s crunchy and a bit salty. It would’ve been perfect if served with soysauce and calamansi or vinegar. Uhmm… just a suggestion.

There’s a number of people gathered around this stall. Hmmm… the sight of the pans make me wanna try ’em all. Deep dish pizza for pizza lovers!

The pizza looks inviting… enticing… but sadly, it failed to satisfy our palate. The crust was thick and has a texture of a tasty/american bread, that absorbed the sauce. The topmost layer of the pizza did not have enough sauce which made the pizza dry and a bit hard to chew.

Oh man! You will get some sugar rush with the huge selection of sweets in IL Mercanti. We tried Blueberry Cheesecake… one of my favorites. The taste was ok but not as good as the ones sold in some famous bakeshops in the metro.

This must be the best among what I had that night. This is… AMBURGER’s Juicy Lucy with Bacon Mushroom Melt. OOOHHHLALA!!!

The patty itself is stuffed with cheese making every bite oooozing with cheesy goodness. The huge cheeseburger has generous servings of crunchy bacon, lettuce, mushroom, blue cheese, cheese sauce, onion, relish, and the thick Juicy Lucy patty.

It was awesome!!! As much as I like to finish the entire burger, I couldn’t because I had little of everything we ordered and I’m stuffed. I find this the most delish burger in town. It’s OUTRAGEOUS, I tell ‘ya!

Hurry up and experience good food and fun with your family and friends here in IL Mercanti. I know the bazaar just started and a lot of improvements will take place as they settle. I will definitely go back for some more Juicy Lucy burger and try out other food they offer.

Best Food Forward 2011 – NBC Tent, Bonifacio Global City

What a great weekend it was for foodies, families and friends who enjoyed fun-filled activities and food tasting in Global City, Taguig. This event showcased gastronomic creations of culinary experts and newcomers in the industry. For only Php50 entrance fee many were able to help build funds for the farming and feeding programs of Gawad Kalinga and Unang Hakbang Foundation.

Everything’s just fantastic! I was overwhelmed with so many delectable treats…Imagine a child in a toy store, that’s how I felt.  I wish I could buy everything…all the chocolates, cakes, and ice cream. Too bad I’m not fortunate to have that much of moolah nowadays.   :/

There’s just so many things to do, like face painting and craft for the kids; watching cooking demos and having your photos taken at the photo booth. As for us, we sampled those that caught our senses, especially those with decorative booth displays. From sweet chocolate cupcakes to pig breads, nachos and chili beans, mini puto to fried siopao, and bubble tea to liquer bonbons…the list goes on.

We then decided to have lunch. Baloogs had Spiced Xocolat Chicken with rice and potato gratin for Php100. I wasn’t able to take a photo of that. My bad. I was too busy looking for a seat. Anyway, the chicken is almost black in color as it was covered with chocolate and some seasoning. It tasted a bit salty for me.

I ordered 6pcs chicken wings from Manang’s chicken. No fancy brand name or tag line just lip smacking deep fried chicken covered in special sauce and sesame seeds. It was so good I couldn’t shut myself from the ooohs and mmmss coz of it’s goodness. Definitely better than other soy-fried-chicken.

We were having lunch while private chef Sau del Rosario prepared a summer concoction, a pan-fried tuna with salsa, and pasta marinara (i just named it). We were sitting on the second row and had a chance to taste the pasta dish. The shrimp, squid, and fish were in just the right amount of firmness as well as the squid inked pasta. Al Dente! The taste is enhanced with Beringer wine.  Perfecto!   🙂

Chef Luis Chikiamco prepared a pan fried Angus beef with 3 mushroom side dish. The oil from the pan grilled beef with thyme and garlic was used to make the sauce which made it tastier. We sampled the steak cooked medium rare. It was sooooooo good! I like how warm and soft the meat was. The top and the bottom were beautifully charred and the sides browned. Yum!!!

The organizers gave away raffle prizes and awarded merchant for different categories. No one went home empty handed/hungry.

Here are some of my personal favorites:

Move over Royce…Risa’s here for the same chocolate delight. These premium chocolates are so velvety smooooth. I especially love the creamy texture of the tiramissyou ( their version of tiramisu) and their melt-in-your-mouth classic truffles. It’s rich chocolate sweetness will make you want more. Cuadro bars are priced P170-180 and Php 130-360 for truffles.

heavenly goodness

Get that sweet chewy chill of ice cream filled mochi by Mochiko. Mochi is a japanese mixture made of rice flour “mochiko” with a sweet filling. An innovation in ice cream varieties, this mochiko is filled with ice cream flavors you don’t usually find in grocery stores such as their top 3 best sellers: green tea, azuki or red bean, and black sesame. Other flavors are mango, vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, and caramel.

I tried green tea and found it interesting. I only had green tea with my starbuck’s frappuccino and thought it would taste the same.  Prized at Php70 each, it’s a great steal!  🙂

simply irresistible...mochi ice cream

See you all next year for another gastronomic feast!!!

Pan de Amerikana – Marikina

I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw this place… a unique rustic themed restaurant, something I imagined to be in Tagaytay or Antipolo and not in Marikina. I have lived in Marikina for a decade and heard about this place. Pan de Amerikana? I was visualizing a plain bakery, nothing special to make me go there. I was wrong. After so many photos seen on the internet, I dragged my cousin to check out the place and try their food. Anyways, it’s just a 10 minute ride from our place. Here are random photos of the bakery/resto.

You guys can enjoy taking photos, chat with your friends, relax on the hammock swing, climb the tree house, or play chess (some chess boards are carved on the tables…cool!). Oh yeah! You can bring your laptop or gadgets too since they have free wifi access.

What’s more amazing is their food. Pan de Amerikana serves mostly Filipino dishes, there’s ILOKANO (longganisa, papaitan, pinakbet, and igado, BICOLANO (bicol express and laing), CEBUANO (sinugba), KAPAMPANGAN (pork and bangus sisig), and BATANGENO (tawilis). There’s also Halo-Halo, carbonara, spaghetti, turon, and their famous pandesal for snacks. Check out the menu board below. You need not worry about your budget; you can spend as low as 20 pesos for spaghetti and as much as 150 pesos for a t-bone steak. Ain’t that cool?… That’s totally awesome!

Next time you’re in Marikina, drop by and chill in Pan De Amerika. You might want to join also Tai-Chi lessons, photography clubs, and Art classes… so tag your family and friends along!

Slice N’ Dice -P.Tuazon, Q.C.

I felt excited when I heard that there’s a newly opened Slice N’ Dice branch near my place. I’ve been wanting to eat steak and I was wishing this one would satisfy my craving. Slice N’ Dice (formerly In and Out) is the place to be if you want cheap steaks.

The huge signs outside show 99 pesos steaks. Seems catchy…indeed! Their menu consists of breakfast, snacks, ice cream cakes for dessert, and of course steaks. I ordered T-bone for 99 pesos; plus I also added plain rice (21 pesos) and soda (33 pesos).

The beef was relatively thin and topped with gravy.  I added hot sauce and worcestershire sauce for more flavor. I wished the steak was bigger because I chowed this one down in less than 10 minutes.

Honestly, It might take time before I go back to this place (this branch); There’s just so many things for them to work on…they have to train their crew to assist and be courteous to customers. It was very hot inside and people were already complaining but the waiter didn’t turn on the AC. Also, when we were about to leave the place, NO “thank you”…nothing was heard from them. Were they very busy? (Note: the owner was even there inside the store..tsk tsk tsk). To the management: take time to train your people, it will surely help your business.
